The Complete NRI Bride Checklist — Commissioning Your Bridal Lehenga from Delhi

NRI bride checklist — commissioning bridal lehenga from Delhi to USA UK Canada Australia

    The NRI Bride's Complete Playbook

Every year, hundreds of brides in New York, London, Toronto, Sydney, Dubai, San Francisco and Singapore commission their bridal lehengas from Delhi. The reasons are simple — direct access to master karigars, prices that are 40–70% lower than diaspora boutiques, and a level of bespoke that simply does not exist outside India. But the process can feel overwhelming. This is the checklist we share with every NRI bride who walks (or video-calls) into Le Wraps.

    12 Months Before the Wedding

    1. Lock the Wedding Calendar First

Before you even start shopping, finalise the wedding date, mehendi date, sangeet date, and reception date. Many NRI brides have 3–5 functions, often spread across two countries. Your wardrobe count depends on this calendar.

    2. Decide India Trip Dates

Most NRI brides need two India trips — one for first measurements and design freeze (3–4 days), one for final fittings (5–7 days, ideally 2–3 weeks before the wedding). If you can only manage one trip, we plan around that — but two is ideal.

    3. Set a Realistic Budget

A bespoke bridal lehenga from a top Delhi atelier costs ₹85,000 to ₹15,00,000+ (roughly USD $1,000 – $18,000). Factor in:

  1. Bridal lehenga (main outfit)
  2. Sangeet outfit
  3. Mehendi outfit
  4. Reception outfit (often a gown or saree)
  5. Trousseau pieces (kurtas, sarees for everyday post-wedding wear)
  6. DHL international shipping (₹15,000 – ₹40,000 depending on country & weight)
  7. Customs duty in your country (varies — see below)
  8. 8–10 Months Before — The Discovery Phase

    4. Shortlist 3–5 Designers

Look at Instagram, Pinterest, and Google for designers whose aesthetic matches yours. Ask for video walkthroughs before committing. A real atelier will happily show you their workshop, fabric library, and previous brides on a live call.

    5. Book Virtual Consultations

A proper NRI consultation is 60–90 minutes, conducted on Zoom or WhatsApp video. The designer should:

  9. Understand your wedding theme, venue, and personal style
  10. Show you fabric swatches on camera
  11. Sketch initial design directions live
  12. Quote a transparent budget range
  13. If a boutique refuses video calls or rushes you through in 15 minutes, walk away.

    6. Lock Your Designer with a Token Advance

Most Delhi ateliers (including Le Wraps) ask for a 20–30% booking advance to lock your slot in the karigar calendar. Bridal embroidery slots fill 8–12 months in advance for peak wedding season (October–February).

6 Months Before — Design & First Measurements

    7. The First India Trip (3–4 Days)

    Use this trip for:

  14. **Day 1:** Detailed consultation, mood board sign-off, fabric selection
  15. **Day 2:** First full body measurements (20+ measurements taken twice for accuracy)
  16. **Day 3:** Embroidery sample approval, blouse pattern selection, dupatta drape decision
  17. **Day 4:** Visit fabric markets if you want to source extras (optional)
  18. If you genuinely cannot fly down, we can work with professional measurements taken by a tailor in your city — but we need a video of the measurement session and a fitted reference garment couriered to us.

    8. Approve Embroidery Samples in Writing

Always get a physical 6"x6" embroidery sample of the exact motif, thread, and beadwork used in your lehenga. Approve it via email or WhatsApp with a date stamp. This protects both sides.

3 Months Before — Crafting & Mock Fittings

    9. Request Progress Photos Every 2–3 Weeks

A trustworthy atelier will share WhatsApp progress updates — embroidery in progress, blouse cutting, dupatta border work. If you go silent for 6+ weeks, follow up.

    10. Plan a Mock Fitting via Video

If you cannot fly down for a mid-stage fitting, we ship a muslin toile (a calico mock-up) to your address. You wear it, send back photos and videos, and we adjust the master pattern before final stitching.

4–6 Weeks Before — Final Fitting Trip

    11. Final India Trip (5–7 Days)

This is the critical trip. Plan:

  19. **Day 1–2:** Arrival, rest, first fitting
  20. **Day 3:** Adjustments based on first fitting
  21. **Day 4:** Second fitting + bridal trial with jewellery & shoes
  22. **Day 5:** Minor tweaks, dupatta drape practice, photography test
  23. **Day 6:** Final hand-over, packing, customs documentation
  24. **Day 7:** Buffer day in case anything needs last-minute adjustment
  25. 12. Bring Your Wedding Jewellery & Shoes to Fittings

The lehenga drape changes 2–3 inches depending on heel height. Bring the actual kalire, choodha, jewellery set, and bridal shoes to your final fitting. We adjust the floor length based on these.

    Shipping & Customs — Country-by-Country Notes

    USA

  26. **DHL Express:** 4–7 business days, fully tracked, insured for declared value
  27. **Customs duty:** Apparel imports under USD $800 are duty-free for personal use; above that, duty is roughly 10–15% of declared value
  28. **Tip:** Declare honestly — under-declaration risks seizure and significant penalties
  29. UK

  30. **DHL Express:** 3–5 business days
  31. **Customs duty:** 12% on apparel above £135, plus 20% VAT on the duty-inclusive value
  32. **Tip:** Have your wedding invitation ready as proof of personal (non-commercial) use
  33. Canada

  34. **DHL Express:** 4–6 business days
  35. **Customs duty:** 18% on apparel + 5–15% GST/HST depending on province
  36. **Tip:** Use a customs broker if total value exceeds CAD $3,000
  37. Australia

  38. **DHL Express:** 4–7 business days
  39. **Customs duty:** GST of 10% on items over AUD $1,000; apparel duty 5%
  40. **Tip:** Quarantine declarations are strict — declare any silk, leather embellishments, or natural fibres clearly
  41. UAE

  42. **DHL Express:** 2–3 business days
  43. **Customs duty:** 5% on most apparel, often waived for personal effects under AED 3,000
  44. **Tip:** Dubai customs are efficient — usually cleared the same day
  45. Singapore & Hong Kong

  46. **DHL Express:** 2–4 business days
  47. **Customs duty:** Generally duty-free for personal apparel; 7–9% GST in Singapore on items over SGD $400
  48. What to Carry Back vs Ship

    Carry in your check-in (always):

  49. The bridal lehenga itself (in a hard garment box)
  50. The bridal blouse
  51. The dupatta(s)
  52. Any heavily embellished pieces
  53. Ship via DHL (acceptable):

  54. Sangeet, mehendi, reception outfits
  55. Trousseau kurtas and sarees
  56. Family outfits (mother of the bride, sister of the bride)
  57. Never check-in your main bridal lehenga in regular checked baggage — airlines lose ~1 in 200 bags. Either carry it on board (most airlines allow a garment bag in addition to cabin baggage if you ask) or ship it 3 weeks ahead.

    Red Flags to Watch For

  58. Designer refuses video calls or workshop tours
  59. No written quote with itemised costs
  60. No physical embroidery sample provided
  61. Pressure to pay 100% upfront
  62. No contract or terms in writing
  63. Promises of "10-day delivery" for bridal lehengas (impossible for hand-embroidery)
